New York, CNN — In the latest episode of “How to Go to Jail for Dummies,” a series of viral TikTok videos convinced some aspiring financial geniuses that they could hit the jackpot at Chase ATMs. Turns out, they weren’t exactly gaming the system — they were just committing fraud. Who knew?

Over the weekend, TikTok was buzzing with videos of people who thought they had discovered the Holy Grail of free money. They were depositing checks with numbers as big as their imaginations and then withdrawing slightly smaller, but still very impressive, amounts of cash. “Look, Ma! I’m rich!” they likely shouted as they strutted away from the ATM, dollar bills flying in the air like they were in a rap video. But there was just one tiny, insignificant detail they overlooked: they were breaking the law.

Chase, the party pooper in this scenario, quickly swooped in to burst everyone’s bubble. The bank announced, with the kind of no-nonsense tone usually reserved for disappointed parents, that what these “geniuses” were doing was, in fact, check fraud — a criminal offense that can earn you fancy new bracelets (the metal kind, not the ones from Cartier).
