I drove back to my lonely home.
I was embarrassed. I replayed the scenario at the restaurant over and over again in my head. I remembered the facial expressions of the other women at the table. I had never been so embarrassed in my life. I was embarrassed in front of other affluent ladies.
The waiter didn’t even lower his voice or try to whisper. He probably never had a client whose card declined. Most of the patrons at the restaurant were affluent. Food Theory was an exclusive restaurant in Orange Ranch.
“Your card is not going through, do you have another one?” He asked.
His voice was loud enough for the other women to hear. I wished for a split second, the ground would open and swallow me.
“Are you sure?” I asked nervously, I felt my voice crack with embarrassment.
“Yes.” He replied. I took the card from him. “There has to be a mistake somewhere.” How could an American Express card decline? I rarely spent money on the card. I looked at the expiration date, the expiration date was three years from now.
