“It’s truly wonderful to have the family together, and I am glad everyone could make it to the brunch. Most people are here from different cities and other parts of the world. We haven’t been together as a family unit in a very long time, and it hurts that it took Alli’s death to bring us all together,” Aunt Claudette said. Her voice was strong and confident, with a mixture of joy and sadness. Her daughter Idara inherited that from her.
“Lilian is not here yet,” my mom chimed in.
Aunt Claudette gave her a sharp, playful look.
“I know, sweetheart, but it’s worth noting,” she replied with a sweet smile. My mom and her siblings were fun to watch. “Let’s pray before we eat. There is so much to eat and drink, and we can talk. Uncle Gabriel will bless the food as the oldest member of the family.”
“Could you at least wait for Lilian to get here before you bless the food?” Teresa, their cousin, said with a hint of impatience in her voice.
Aunt Claudette’s face twisted into a look of disdain as she stared at Teresa.
