“So this is what you have been doing behind my back” my mom accused in a loud voice.

I prayed that her voice was not loud enough for my neighbors to hear.

“Stop, you are going to wake the kids up,” I heard my dad say.

“I don’t care, I don’t care who hears my voice, the kids, the neighbors, anybody, I want this prostitute out of my house,” my mom replied. Her voice was a little louder than before.

“You dare call me a prostitute,” Tatanisha said.

“Yes and I will call you one again,” my mom snapped.

“Rosemary, stop,” my dad said. He sounded perplexed.

I heard a slap and my mom screamed.

“You dare slap me,” my mom yelled.

I was shaking with fear in my cold and dark bedroom. I could not hold on any longer. I was also fighting the tears that had formed in my eyes, I opened my door slowly and peeped.

“Yes, and I will slap you again if you call me a heifer. Have you forgotten that we are both night workers, we have money thrown at our bodies in exchange for money.” Tatanisha screamed right back. Her voice was louder than mom’s.
