At least, that was what she told my mommy.
My mommy was a poor widow who retired on a paltry pension. Our home was becoming dilapidated. The roof was leaking, and on nights when it rained, I had to use an old bucket to collect water. The drainage system was going bad, and we owed Tim money for the last time he came to do the plumbing. When our neighbors were not awake, I had to throw water outside.
I passed my exams with flying colors and looked forward to going to university. Likewise, I wanted us to get out of this hardship. The type of hardship that made me wonder where my next meal would come from.
Sarah was a big lady in the community. She was the big sister for other young girls. She was the first female to study abroad. Not only that, she got a scholarship to Oxford University in England.
There were rumors she was into prostitution and didn’t go to Oxford. It was a front. There was no proof to back up the rumor that she was into prostitution, so that theory was discarded.
She came home every year for Christmas and took a girl under her wing. The criteria was passing the West African School Certificate with flying colors. She also encouraged us to take the SAT if we wanted to go…
