THE EMPTY WEDDING

The engagement was a sign of things to come.

I called my parents over FaceTime to announce the great news.

I had just gotten engaged to the love of my life. My mom answered, her face showed on the screen. She looked cute in her new ginger colored bob and bright red lipstick. I peered into the background, she was in the dining room with my father.

It was dinner time. My parents had a predictable schedule, and it worked great for me, because I would never call them when it was not convenient.

I flashed my two karat ring at my mom and screamed.

“I am engaged mom, I am going to be a wife,” I screamed in excitement. There was a blank expression on my mon’s face.

She was not happy.

Timi, the love of my life was not my parents choice for me. Why couldn’t they accept that I was madly in love with him, and nothing would change my mind?

My father would respond, “The fact that you claim to be madly in love with him is the problem. When you are madly in love with a person, it means you are not thinking straight. You can’t be mad and in love at the same time.” “What is she saying?” I overheard my father ask mom in the background.
