Professor Okon sat in front of his computer staring at the computer in front of him. He could not believe what he had just read. The department email in which he was cc’d was wide open on his screen. One of his students had accused him of inappropriate behavior.
This was impossible.
How could this happen?
He never made a pass at any student.
He was happily married to his wife of twenty three years.
His career was successful. He had a passion for teaching his students.
It was shameful. He always carried himself with so much dignity. He was respected by members of faculty and his students. How would he face them? What would he say to change the narrative?
A mix of rage and shame washed over him. He was so angry, he could kill the accuser and he was so ashamed, because many people viewed him as a man of integrity. He wondered what was going through the minds of his colleagues. What if he lost his job? He was about six years from going into retirement? And then this?
There was a video link in the email. He clicked on it, and it showed the face of his accuser, Sheila Martins.
Sheila Martins ran the biggest blog on campus. The blog was called ‘The Gossip’.
