The liquor store was filled with different people. The familiar smell of the place filled my nostrils as I stood behind the line waiting to get my ticket. I had never played the lotto before today, but there was something about today's winnings that made me decide to play.

At work, my colleagues chattered endlessly about the lotto.

“1.8 billion!” George, the nerd who wore the thickest glasses I had ever seen, commented. His lenses were as thick as a Coca-Cola glass bottle.

“I bought twelve tickets,” Sheila responded as she leaned against his table. She always wanted his attention, even though she never got it.

“I will buy more on the way home,” George replied.

“Have you bought our ticket Sharon?” Anita asked me.

“I have never played the lotto,” I replied weakly. The expression on their faces was that of utter surprise.

“Are you kidding?” Anita asked

“No, I am not,” I replied.

“Is becoming wealthy not something you want in your future?” George asked, sounding dumbfounded.

“It is, but what are the odds?” I asked. There was always only one person, or sometimes none at all.
