Ruka stood by the huge window in her living room. Her phone was resting on a table in front of her. It began to vibrate.
She looked at the caller ID and realized it was an unknown number. She never liked answering calls from numbers she did not know. She decided to take a chance by answering the phone.
“Hello?”
There was no sound coming from the other end of the phone. Was this a prank call?
“Ruka!” the voice called out. Ruka instantly recognized the voice. It was Caroline, her old neighbor on Osborn Road in Ikoyi. Why was she calling with an unknown number?
“Caroline, good afternoon,” Ruka replied. “I hope all is well, how are the kids?”
“My dear neighbor, the kids are well. I am good, and you?”
“Not doing too bad, I am home relaxing.” Ruka replied.
“Ah, you are home relaxing, when there is fire on the mountain.” Caroline replied.
Ruka knew Caroline, and gossip went hand in hand. She always knew what was going on in town, whose wife was wearing the latest and most expensive designer purse, whose husband was throwing massive yacht parties, whose wife was spending time in Turks and Caicos or Tenerife. Caroline thrived in gossip.
