She came to me with a sob story. The kind that makes you have empathy, because you don't want to see anyone you care for suffer.
She was an international student who had married someone for her green card. She decided to change her status because her father became ill and could not support the financial aspect of her education, which was four times the cost for domestic students.
She began to have problems with her “green card” husband. He abused her and made her feel less human. He monitored everything she did in the house by installing cameras, he watched her while he was away at work. She lived on eggshells. She was uncomfortable. She was grateful that he helped her get her temporary residency status, even though she paid him, but he made her life a living hell. She wanted out. Her lawyer said she could file domestic violence and still get her ten year green card, but she was not positive about the outcome. She hadn’t reeled from the fact that she was once in love with him, and he turned out to be a monster. She offered to pay him because she was desperate at the time, and it was a good incentive from him, since he had financial problems.
