It was one of those days. Work was hectic. I could not get through to my husband’s phone. I had called more than four times in three hours. The school had called my phone to let me know the kids were waiting to be picked up.

It was unlike my husband not to return my calls or even respond with a text if he was at a meeting or something.

I had three Zoom meetings that were somewhat mandatory. I had no one else to pick up my kids from school. It was almost 4 pm. I sent a message to the project manager, whom I was directly under. I knew she wouldn’t like the fact that I was going to miss not one but three meetings, but my family would always come first. I could replace my job, but not my family, especially the two darlings I called my daughters.

Antoinette, my first child, was in the fifth grade. She was ten going on thirty. She was intelligent and mature. Her younger sister Grace was in the second grade. She was the quiet one. The one who thought before speaking, the gracious one, just as her name implied.

A text message popped up on my screen, it was from Antoinette.

“Mom, how long will it take you or dad to pick us up?”

I closed my eyes and heaved a deep sigh. How was I going to respond to this message? I would try to call my…
